How to prepare for your lab draw
Getting ready for your lab draw is straightforward. Following these steps will help ensure accurate results and a smooth process:
1. Avoid strenuous exercise for two days
Intense workouts can temporarily affect biomarkers related to muscle breakdown and inflammation. For the most accurate results, avoid strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours before your blood draw. Gentle activities like walking or stretching are fine.
2. Fast for 8 hours
To ensure reliable results, fast for at least 8 hours before your appointment. This means no food or drinks, including coffee. However, drink plenty of water during and after your fast.
3. Avoid alcohol for 8 hours
Alcohol can impact biomarkers like blood sugar and liver enzymes. Avoid consuming alcohol for at least 8 hours before your lab draw.
4. Avoid seafood for 48 hours
Avoid seafood at least 48 hours before your visit. Many types of seafood, especially shellfish and large fish like tuna or swordfish, contain trace amounts of mercury and arsenic. Eating them shortly before a test can temporarily elevate these levels in your blood or urine, leading to false positives or skewed results in heavy metal screenings.
5. Skip supplements for 72 hours
Avoid taking supplements, as they can temporarily alter certain biomarkers. If you use biotin or have recently had vitamin/mineral infusions, consult your doctor—they may need to be discontinued earlier.
Continue doctor-prescribed medications.
6. Stay hydrated
Proper hydration makes veins easier to locate and the blood draw quicker. Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your appointment.
7. Prepare your ID for verification
Have a valid photo ID ready to confirm your identity when the phlebotomist arrives for your mobile appointment.
